Mrs. Cody’s 6th and 7th grade ELA classes have been busy taking a look into the past. The eighty-three middle school students are preparing for the 7th Annual Wax Museum which will be at NBC on March 7 from 7-8 p.m. in Tiger Arena and the Old Gym. The students have been researching historical people, eras, or groups, as a part of this project. Students first begin by researching and writing drafts highlighting historical significance and accomplishments of people. This project combines ELA standards related to writing, speaking, reading, and presenting. Once the written drafts were ready, Mr. Lafleur’s high school English and Speech students listened and provided feedback to the middle school students. Many of the high school students participated in the Wax Museum when they were in middle school. The collaboration between the groups of students focused on editing, expanding ideas, grammar skills, and brainstorming ideas for visual aids. There will be more collaborations between these groups of students prior to the March 7 event. Next up for the middle school students will be creating visual aids and a top 10 list. These visual aids will highlight accomplishments and other information not included in their speeches. The middle schoolers will memorize their speeches as they become the historical person. Another step in the transformation is costuming. Students are encouraged to dress and have props related to the historical person or era. The students will have a prop to collect coins and dollar bills. The money is the ticket to bringing the student (wax figure) to life. Prior to this year’s Wax Museum Night, middle school students have raised close to $10,000 for various charities.

Did you know they first started making cheese in a calf’s stomach because of the rennet found there? Culinary I students learned this fact on their trip to Beauty View Farms! It was a fun morning learning about the milking process to wrap up our dairy unit. Their milk is used in dairy products like ice cream, yogurt, and cheese, some of which you can find at the North Bend Locker! *Don’t worry, their cheese isn’t made in a calf’s stomach, but it sure is yummy!
