If you have
a CUMULATIVE GPA (that means all semesters of your high school career combined) of a 93% or above and did not receive this email, please talk to Ms. Morgan.

Students grades 8-12: With upcoming dates out of school (this Friday, next Monday, and Tuesday, April 27), YOU should consider JOB SHADOWING! NBC has a net- work of over 90 Community Partners who have taken students on field experiences in their businesses, organizations, and schools
to show students what their careers are like. Many of these experiences have turned in to part time or summer jobs and sometimes even regular, paid internships in our Career Ed program! Think ahead about those dates and where you could go to find out if your Career plan is what you really want to do! Questions? Ask Mrs. Wright!

#TRUTHThursday DITCH the Vape: Just seconds after inhaling the vapor from an e-cigarette, nicotine, other compounds and organic materi- als are absorbed through the skin, lining of the nose, mouth and lungs and enters the bloodstream. At this time, your heart is especially vulnerable. Vaping causes cholesterol deposits in arteries to become more unstable over time and more likely to rupture. When this happens, it can lead to clot formations in blood vessels which may lead to heart attack or stroke. Within 30 minutes of use, vaping spikes your adrenaline, causing increased blood pressure and heart rate, which means a higher risk of heart attack. With extended e-cigarette use, nicotine and other compounds in the vap- ing solution (acrolein) can cause stiffness in arteries, which is a contributing factor to heart attack and stroke. The added preservatives, compounds and organic chemicals in the liquid solution negatively affect normal blood clotting function almost immediately after vaping. “People don’t realize something you do in your lifestyle now can influence your health 20 years from now. It often takes 10-20 years to feel the full effect of something on your health,” says Dr. Sharaf, a Cardiologist. Teens and young adults can text “DITCHVAPE” to 88709 and get immediate help. Parents of young people who vape can get support at BecomeAnEX.org.

#WinterBlues Practicing mindfulness and meditation may help you manage stress and high blood pressure, sleep better, feel more balanced and connected, and even lower your risk of heart disease. Meditation and mindfulness are practices — often using breath- ing, quiet contemplation or sustained focus on something, such as an image, phrase or sound — that help you let go of stress and feel calmer and more peaceful. Stress is your body’s natural alarm system. It releases a hormone called adrenaline that makes your breathing speed up and your heart rate and blood pressure rise. It kicks us into action, which can be a good thing when we’re faced with a real danger or need to perform. But that “fight or flight” response can take a toll on your body when it goes on too long or is a regular occurrence. Mindfulness meditation provides a method for handling stress in a healthier way. Try different types of medita- tion to find what works for you, and make it a regular part of your healthy lifestyle. Recommended Free Apps: Breathr; Stop, Breathe, and Think; Calm.com; Insight Timer; Plum Village: Zen Meditation; MindShift; Smiling Mind; or Headspace

#TimeforSleep Q: Is it OK to sleep 11 hours on weekends and 5–6 on weekdays? A: No Our bodies (and minds) need a certain amount of sleep each night to be at their best. Although you might feel great on Monday after a weekend sleep fest, all that shuteye won’t help your performance the rest of the week. Our bodies can only catch up on sleep. They can’t store extra sleep to help us func- tion in the days ahead. If you sleep a lot over the weekend but go back to skimping on Monday night, you won’t be at your best on Tuesday. You may not notice you’re tired, but you won’t be operating at your peak. And if you continue this pattern all week, your body will be seriously dragging by Friday. How will this affect you? Sleep fuels our daily activities, whether it’s doing well on tests, competing in sports, mastering skateboard tricks, concentrating while driving, or handling stressful situations. That’s why experts recommend that teens get 8–10 hours of sleep a night. Sticking to a similar sleep schedule during the week and the weekend can help you fall asleep at night and have enough energy during the day.

Good luck to the girls and boys varsity basketball teams at Tekamah-Herman and the junior high girls basketball team here vs Stan- ton!

Happy Birthday to Rachel Adams and Colin Stephenson

#MattersMonday International Epilepsy Day February 8th Epilepsy is a chronic disorder, which includes recurrent, unprovoked sei- zures. Epilepsy is NOT contagious. You simply can’t catch epilepsy from another person. Anyone can develop epilepsy. Seizures start for the first time in people over age 65 almost as often as it does in children. Seizures in the elderly are often the after effect of other health problems like stroke and heart disease. The Epilepsy Foundation’s goal is to help everyone understand what a seizure looks like and what to do if they see someone having a seizure. Seizure First Aid Steps: Step 1. STAY with the person; Step 2. Keep the person SAFE; Step 3. Turn the person onto their SIDE. Since 1963, February has been coined “National Heart Month”. A month where Americans are encouraged to adopt healthy lifestyles to prevent heart disease. Heart disease is the #1 cause of death globally for both men and women. Heart attacks and strokes attribute to 85% of these deaths. Heart healthy living includes understanding your risks, making choices, and taking preventative measures. At North Bend Central students can participate in the “Heart Challenge” Bingo game and gain knowledge in days of the week self-care tips. The “Heart Challenge” will be in the form of a Bingo card and is planned for Middle School & High School Students for our Heart Month. Pick up a Bingo card at the front office. There are 25 listed heart healthy goals to cross off over 10 days. Nurse Brokaw will announce the daily number drawn, (#1-25) on your Bingo card to see if you are able to check off the goal for that day. On day 10 if you have completed the challenge and have a Bingo, return your card to the office. If you have a Bingo, you will be entered to win one of five $10 gift cards to Juice Stop! If there is no winner on day 10, Nurse Brokaw will continue drawing numbers until a student has Bingo.
